Just FYI, we have historically discouraged the discussion of any regulatory or political issues on here. The FLEX is a completely DIY, distributed, and not-for-profit technology and as devs we aren't advocating for any particular use case that might be subject to these discussions (even if the GG2 design it is based off of is more specific to a particular market!).
There have been rumors of this sort of re-definition/regulation for some time and it was one of the reasons we wanted to make this project public and open source the whole thing.
By supplying the FLEX in a parts kit format with no particular code or project files/materials included or promoted by the devs, we hope to simultaneously avoid a lot of scrutiny and reach a larger userbase, while also putting it out there and making it impossible to completely erase as a technology.
As we get closer to a crowdfunding system or a proper commercial kit, we'll start marketing in other spaces where DIYers might be interested in the mill. Custom automotive, robotics, electronics/PCB manufacture, hobby RC/plane/drone, etc. all have a lot of space for this sort of machine (most comparable scale 4/5 axis desktop CNC's running between $1500-2500) and we're hoping that by making it widely used and ubiquitous enough, it will always be out there.
